Singapore said on Tuesday it has launched the region’s first large-scale integrated microgrid – the Renewable Energy Integration Demonstrator (REIDS) – to address the issue of intermittency from the use of renewables for power generation in remote communities and urban areas.
Speaking at Singapore International Energy Week 2014, Second Minister for Home Affairs and Trade and Industry S. Iswaran said the test facility at the Semakau Landfill integrates renewables, diesel, energy-storage and power-to-gas technologies in a one-megawatt hybrid AC/DC network to deliver an uninterrupted supply of power.
An estimated S$8 million (US$6.4 million) will be invested in the microgrid infrastructure. The project is expected to attract another S$20 million in investments from the energy industry.
“The successful demonstration of these technologies will translate into the ability for Singapore, together with our partners, to provide electricity to island communities and remote villages, as well as strengthen grid stability in urban communities – all of which are acute needs in Asia,” Iswaran told industry executives and government officials at the opening ceremony of the Asia Clean Energy Summit.
The REIDS project is led by the Energy Research Institute at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University and supported by the city-state’s Economic Development Board and National Environment Agency.
“Singapore has developed a vibrant clean energy ecosystem, comprising industry-oriented research institutes, companies, financial institutions and test-bed opportunities,” said Iswaran, who is also minister in the prime minister’s office.
“With these key ingredients in place to take clean energy concepts from ideas to market deployment, Singapore is well regarded as a hub in Asia for clean energy.”
