How a lack of natural resources sparked Japan's energy innovation

Japan’s limited energy resources has seen the country turned to cutting-edge technology to boost its energy security, with renewable energy technologies now the priority, according to Japan’s former energy minister. Find out more here...

Japan has a reputation for cutting-edge technology and a robust push toward renewable energy technologies has become a priority, said Yoriko Kawaguchi, the former Japanese Minister of the Environment and former Minister for Foreign Affairs.

“One very basic element that you have to understand about Japan when it comes to energy is that Japan does not have any domestic energy source,” he explained.

Kawaguchi was speaking at an Asia Society panel discussion with David Sandalow, the Inaugural Fellow at Columbia University's Center on Global Energy Policy.
