REmap: Renewable Energy Prospects for India
With India’s energy demands growing rapidly over the next decade, what actions are needed for the country to achieve a sustainable future? Find out more in this IRENA paper.
India’s energy needs are rising fast, with growth in electricity demand and other energy uses among the highest in the world. Its population and economic growth, combined with accelerating urbanisation, put India in a unique position among the world’s major energy-consuming economies.
The number of people living in cities and towns will increase from 435 million in 2015 to 600 million by 2030, and India’s demands, especially for electricity, will significantly increase. The International Renewable Energy Agency’s analysis indicates that India’s energy demands will more than double by 2030, while demand for electricity will more than triple.
India has started to take steps to accelerate the move towards a sustainable future with renewable energy sources, and to ensure accessibility and affordability for the population.
