Launch of Singapore Standards on Renewable Energy Certificates

The growing adoption of renewables-based energy solutions has seen market instruments such as Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) emerge. These have become more commonly used by relevant stakeholders, such as energy installation owners and end users, to meet their climate and sustainability commitments.

To reinforce its commitment to the clean energy transition, Singapore launched a new national standard to enhance the credibility and accountability of RECs that are used to make renewable energy claims in the country—the Singapore Standards (SS) 673 on the Code of Practice for RECs.

SS 673 is a joint effort by the National Environment Agency, the Sustainable Energy Association of Singapore, the Energy Market Authority, as well as representatives from industry stakeholders and academia. The use of RECs will be overseen by the Singapore Standards Council (SSC).

RECs are market-based instruments to substantiate that electricity has been generated from renewable energy sources. One REC represents one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity generated from a renewable energy source delivered to the grid.
