Four Singaporean engineering students have been awarded this year’s Energy-Industry Scholarship (EIS) - a dedicated scholarship for the energy sector offered in partnership by the Energy Market Authority (EMA) and industry partners.

2.         The four recipients are Mr Muhammad A’rash bin Noor Effendi from Ngee Ann Polytechnic, and Mr Mohamed Arshath S/O Haja Sheik Allaudeen, Mr Alex Neo Yi Jie and Mr Manfred Lee from Singapore Polytechnic. They will join their respective sponsoring organisations after completing their studies and National Service.

3.       Mr Muhammad A’rash, a third year Electrical Engineering student who is sponsored by Eigen Energy, recognises that some challenges require a collective effort and loves to work with others to solve meaningful problems. He was motivated to apply for the EIS when he learnt that the scholarship would grant him experience in the clean energy sector, while securing a job in this exciting industry upon graduation. He said, “I hope to contribute to the fight against climate change by learning how to build solar energy systems as a renewable energy engineer.”

4.      For second year polytechnic student Mr Manfred Lee, he first heard of the EIS back in his days as an ITE College student. He was attracted to the scholarship when he found out that it would include the opportunity to join the industry. He said “I’m deeply grateful to Tuas Power for granting this scholarship opportunity to me, which will help to ease the financial burden on my family. I hope to learn how to improve the efficiency of our power generation system and support Singapore’s energy transition to reach net-zero carbon emissions.”

5.      Launched in 2014, the EIS highlights EMA’s and the industry’s commitment to build a strong pipeline of local talent to power Singapore’s critical infrastructure.

6.      To build up an adequate manpower pipeline and a competent workforce to support our energy transition, an open call was made to companies from the clean energy sector in 2021 to be a sponsoring organisation of the EIS. EIS has ten sponsoring organisations thus far.

7.      Co-funded by EMA and the industry, the EIS covers recipients’ tuition fees, monthly living allowance and a one-time allowance to purchase study-related items such as computers and books. Both full-term and mid-term scholarships are available to Singaporean citizens and permanent residents pursuing relevant engineering courses.

8.      Applications for the next EIS cycle will open in December 2022 and close in March 2023. Interested applicants can visit https://go.gov.sg/eis to submit their applications.
