Highlights from Thinktank Roundtable Session B
Session B of the SIEW Thinktank Roundtables saw expert panellists explore the roles of nuclear technology and geothermal energy in advancing Singapore’s climate goals.
Organised by the Energy Studies Institute and Singapore Nuclear Research and Safety Initiative, National University of Singapore, panellists in the first roundtable explored the viability of nuclear energy as a decarbonisation strategy in ASEAN.

ASEAN generates close to 7 Mt of CO2 and this will increase 3.7 folds if we continue with BAU, according to the 7th ASEAN Energy Outlook report. In Indonesia, nuclear will play a significant role in emissions reduction. #SIEW2022

The second roundtable in this session was organised by the Energy Research Institute @ Nanyang Technological University (ERI@N). Various industry and academic leaders put forth projects that covered a comprehensive and integrated net zero approach. Prof Alessandro Romagnoli from ERI@N explored Singapore’s geothermal potential, with research underway to determine this.

We are drilling two boreholes at sembawang hot springs to test out SG geothermal potential; results are expected in Q1 2023. Other potential geothermal sites are at Cochrane Lodge and Pulau Tekong. Prof Alessandro Romagnoli shared @NTUsg #SIEW2022
