Evolving Role of Natural Gas in Asia’s Low-Carbon Future
Regulatory and industry leaders gathered at SIEW Summit Session 5 to explore how natural gas continues to anchor Asia’s energy security, while supporting the transition to low-carbon power systems. Martin Houston, Chairman, Omega Oil and Gas moderated the panel discussion.
Role of natural gas in Singapore's energy resilience
Speakers from Singapore LNG Corporation (SLNG) and Singapore GasCo underscored the country's focus on ensure energy security. Alan Heng, CEO of Singapore GasCo, noted that the price shocks of 2021–2022 were a stark reminder of the importance of reliable supply. Mr Heng add that Singapore’s gas strategy is built on flexibility, affordability and redundancy. Remarking on developments in Singapore, SLNG CEO Leong Wei Hung shared his perspectives on how LNG infrastructure acts as the invisible backbone of systems stability, enabling secure energy imports while renewable integration expands.
Takao Tsukui, President and CEO of Mitsubishi Power, echoed the sentiments, highlighting that gas-powered plants complement renewables infrastructure and are also being future-proofed for hydrogen co-firing and carbon capture compatibility. “Gas is not just a transition fuel. It is a partner to renewables — and a long-term investment,” he added.
Judy Chang, Commissioner at the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), outlined how the U.S. coordinates gas pipelines and wholesale power markets to maintain reliability. She encouraged regulators in the region to focus on ensuring resource adequacy, clear rules and stable incentives to attract private capital.
Solutions to address regional challenges
Izumi Kai, CEO of JERA Asia, shared his views on how industry players can address current barriers, from declining domestic gas reserves to infrastructure challenges. He emphasised that the combination of renewables and natural gas in the energy remains the most practical path for near-term decarbonisation.
