Building cybersecurity in the energy sector

cyber

The rapid evolution of technology has changed the traditional conception of national security. As cities become ‘smarter’, their risk to cyber threats increases exponentially.

The energy sector is a prime target for cyber-attacks because these can threaten a nation’s security, economy, public health, and safety, possibly even bringing a country to a standstill.

A key difficulty is that “cyber threats are constantly evolving,” said Michael Mylrea, manager for cyber security and energy infrastructure at the U.S. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, at a SIEW 2015 roundtable on cybersecurity in the energy sector. “As soon as you come up with a standard, it is already becoming irrelevant.”

In a recent publication by the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), Mylrea shared how Singapore’s smart city can be secured from emerging cyber threats beyond improving technical cyber defense standards. This includes designing cyber smart policies and regulations, and investing in the development of a cyber savvy workforce. Read on to learn more.
