Hydrogen is one of the top trending topics at SIEW 2020. The second day of the S&P Global Platts LNG & Hydrogen Gas Markets Asia Conference (27-28 October) examined the rise of the hydrogen economy against the backdrop of the energy transition momentum in Asia.

A key takeaway from the virtual sessions was that countries across the Asia Pacific region, especially Australia and Japan, have set up projects and policies to include hydrogen as part of their energy mix with lower costs.

Conference highlights include:

  • A keynote address by H.E. Dr. Rashid Al Leem, Chairman, Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority, who encouraged all industry stakeholders to collaborate for sustainable energy future, setting the stage for the rest of hydrogen discussions.
  • An Australian perspective on hydrogen presented by Ms Fiona Simon, CEO of the Australian Hydrogen Council. She provided a comprehensive review of Australia’s hydrogen economy and the emerging hydrogen industry, along with the needed policy and regulatory support.
  • Updates on hydrogen developments delivered by the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ), including the country’s hydrogen strategy, supply and applications.

Another session covered the potential of hydrogen as an energy carrier, where speakers talked about how hydrogen needs to be stored properly to enable more end uses—making hydrogen storage a key enabling technology for tomorrow’s low carbon energy systems.
