Speakers at the SIEW Thinktank Roundtable A discussed the current developments in carbon capture and storage solutions. Lai Ming Kwan reports.

4-13-1

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is an important emissions reduction technology that can be applied across the energy system. Here are some of the insights and regional outlooks shared by industry experts during SIEW Thinktank Roundtable A, hosted by the Energy Studies Institute (ESI).

  • Malaysia has established a Low Carbon Cities Framework to promote green technologies in line with the Green Technology Master Plan 2017-2030. This was shared by Dr Radzuan Bin Junin, Professor, University of Technology, Malaysia. A key element of the framework is to increase carbon sequestration by protecting and adding green spaces. Malaysia had also conducted studies to identify the main potential of “source-sink” clusters for CO2.
  • Dr Ganesh Dasari, Senior Technical Advisor, CO2 Storage and Transportation Technical Lead at ExxonMobil Upstream Research Company, discussed the next generation of carbon capture technology that the company is spearheading with partners to improve the efficiency and overall cost proposition for CCS. Dr Dasari also noted that Singapore could play an active role to kickstart CCS initiatives for the ASEAN region.
  • During the panel discussion, Mr Ian Havercroft, Senior Consultant – Legal & Regulatory, Global CCS Institute, highlighted that CCS technologies are available, but policies and regulations remain the barrier. The other panellists agreed that future opportunities would entail regional or bilateral arrangements.
