Continued growth for Asia’s share of renewable electricity generation: IRENA

topic-23-august-2019

Asia accounted for the highest growth in renewable electricity generation, with a recorded increase of 165 TWh, according to the latest data from the IRENA report, Renewable Energy Statistics 2019. The data sets for actual power generation are from 2009 to 2017.

Asia’s share of global renewable generation has increased from 38 to 39 per cent, driven by the expansion of wind and solar generation. Solar generation in the region accounts for almost half of the global total.

Other insights from the report include:

1. Global renewable electricity generation continues to grow. Total electricity generated from renewables was 6191 TWh. This is an increase of 293 TWh, or five per cent. Generation growth remains consistent with previous years, driven by sustained expansion in solar and wind.

2. Asia is driving the increase in total renewable energy capacity. The region was responsible for almost half of the world’s renewable energy capacity, growing to 1024 GW. China continues to lead global energy capacity expansion, with almost 75 GW of new renewable energy capacity.

3. Both solar and wind power generation demonstrated significant growth. Solar generation increased by 35.5 per cent to 437 TWh, while wind generation increased by 18.8 per cent to 1134 TWh.
