Transforming the energy system towards one dominated by renewable energy comes with challenges. Forward-looking planning, modernisation and expansion of supporting infrastructure on land and sea to facilitate the development, storage, distribution and transmission, and consumption of renewables are crucial. It should facilitate national, regional and global strategies for new supply-demand dynamics and promote equity and inclusion.
Each country has its own unique renewable energy mix and demand pattern. By interconnecting countries, it is possible to maximise the complementarity between production and consumption patterns across countries. Besides, they enable exporting overgeneration from renewables, particularly solar and wind. Regional interconnection within ASEAN has many benefits in achieving a lower-cost power system overall. By allowing for integrated energy supply planning and minimising of duplication of both energy and non-energy service provision, it reduces system costs in all scenarios regardless of ambition level.

Presented by:
Funding the energy transition at the pace required to keep the world on a climate-safe pathway will require a substantial increase in investments over their current level, and over the level envisaged in governments' current plans. To enable an energy system aligned with the 1.5°C target, investment in energy transition technologies and related infrastructure will need to rise to over USD 130 trillion by 2050 in the 1.5°C Scenario, complemented by a simultaneous redirection of investment away from fossil fuels. The bulk of investment will need to focus on renewable energy, energy efficiency, electrification and enabling infrastructure.
For Southeast Asia region, in the long term, an average annual investment of USD 210 billion would be needed up to 2050 in the region to achieve the 1.5°C. Renewable power capacity, power grids and infrastructure, and enabling technologies (e.g., storage), will need to see over USD 5 trillion in investment over the period to 2050, making up two-thirds of total energy investment.
