As Asia continues to grow economically, it faces significant challenges in balancing energy demand with environmental sustainability. Biomethane, derived from organic waste, offers a renewable alternative to fossil fuels, while carbon capture technologies can significantly reduce emissions from industrial sectors. Southeast Asia, with its rich agricultural resources, is poised to become a hub for biomethane production. However, challenges persist, including inadequate infrastructure and limited policy support for biomethane adoption beyond electricity generation.

In parallel, the Asia-Pacific region is rapidly advancing in carbon capture and storage (CCS), with emerging hubs in Australia, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Driven by environmental regulations and the urgency to reduce emissions, CCS can play a pivotal role in decarbonising heavy industries and supporting economic development while ensuring energy security. This session will discuss:

  • How can Southeast Asia scale up biomethane production from agricultural waste?
  • What are the latest advancements in CCS technologies for industrial decarbonisation?
  • What policies are needed to accelerate biomethane and CCS adoption in Asia?
  • How can cross-border cooperation enhance the deployment of these technologies?

This event will bring together industry leaders, policymakers, and experts to explore how biomethane and carbon capture can help Asia achieve its emissions reduction targets while driving economic growth.
