Clare McLaughlin joined the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water as Head of Energy Performance and Security Division in February 2023. The Division leads the Australian Government’s work on energy performance, including residential and industrial energy efficiency policy and programs, and energy security, including working across government to identify, mitigate and manage risks to the energy sector.
Over a 30-year career in the Australian Public Service, Clare has held leadership roles in the National Health and Medical Research Council, the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, and the Department of Education, Science and Training. She has worked extensively on policy and funding for science and research, including leading the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy and astronomy policy. She was Science Counsellor at the Australian Embassy and Mission to the European Union in Brussels from 2013–2016.
