8 Key Announcements at SIEW 2018
05.45 PM

1) ASEAN and IRENA sign Memorandum of Understanding
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ASEAN countries to forge a new partnership aimed at advancing the transition to and increasing the deployment of renewable energy.
2) EMA launches programme to facilitate adoption of Energy Storage Systems (ESS)
With solar energy being the most viable renewable energy source in Singapore, ESS facilities will help to mitigate fluctuations in the Solar Photovoltaics output due to occasional cloud cover. The programme, known as ACCESS, will be launched with two partners — PSA Corporation Limited and Sembcorp Industries.
3) NRF and EMA to set up two new consortia to foster adoption of new technology in energy sector
The Cooling Energy Science and Technology Singapore (CoolestSG) consortium will take charge of initiatives to develop and deploy efficient cooling technologies to improve liveability while reducing carbon emissions. On the other hand, the Smart Grid and Power Electronics Consortium Singapore (SPECS) will provide a platform for companies to access innovative technologies and transform them into viable products and services.

4) EMA partners SIT to launch $20 Million research programme to boost Power Engineering Capabilities in Singapore
Called the Exploiting Distributed Generation Programme (EDGE), the partnership research programme will give companies and researchers from institutes of higher learning, the opportunity to participate in calls for grants in areas such as developing innovative new technologies and capabilities in micro-grid design and distributed energy optimisation and management.

5) EMA and Sembcorp Industries renew partnership with $10 Million deal for R&D and Manpower Development
Researchers and companies will have the opportunity to develop new technology and have it potentially test-bedded at Sembcorp’s facilities. The agreement will also allow Sembcorp and EMA to encourage the translation and commercialisation of R&D solutions in areas of strategic interest to Singapore.
6) SkillsFuture Singapore, Workforce Singapore and EMA develop new Skills Framework for Energy and Power
This skills framework will identify the necessary skills and training programmes required for future energy professionals to stay relevant in view of the ongoing technological developments and increased demand for greener energy systems.
7) EMA launches Genco Energy Efficiency Grant Call to give greater support to companies in their drive to become more energy-efficient
The Grant Call will cover up to 50 percent of energy efficiency projects by power generation companies over a five-year period.
8) EMA launches Energy Storage Systems (ESS) Policy Paper to provide guidance on its usage and regulatory treatment
The policy paper concludes that existing regulatory and market frameworks already allow for ESS participation in energy, regulation and reserves markets. The paper will continue to be updated as new developments and business models emerge to ensure regulations remain relevant.

IRENA and ASEAN sign Memorandum of Understanding
04.00 PM

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ASEAN countries to forge a new partnership aimed at advancing the transition to and increasing the deployment of renewable energy.

The signing of the agreement is in line with ASEAN’s goal of renewables accounting for up to 23 percent of its primary energy source by 2025. Achieving this target will require an estimated annual investment of US$27 billion for the next eight years, according to IRENA’s estimates.
As part of the agreement, IRENA and ASEAN Energy Ministers will work closely to ensure the smooth implementation of a variety of focus areas – including greater training opportunities for policymakers, regulators and other key stakeholders looking to build on their knowledge of renewable energy.
Thoughts from SIEW Opening Remarks and Keynote Address: Solving the energy trilemma
03.00 PM
In his opening remarks at Singapore International Energy Week, Singapore’s Minister for Trade and Industry, Mr Chan Chun Sing discussed the need to find solutions for the on-going energy trilemma.
