Climate Change and Decarbonisation Role
Mike leads KPMG’s climate change and decarbonisation sector where he has responsibility for leading KPMG’s work on the provision of decarbonisation and climate risk solutions for its global clients across all sectors. As part of this work, Mike is actively involved in delivering decarbonisation solutions around areas such as climate risk, climate strategy, carbon markets and energy transition for clients in many different sectors. In particular, this work involves advising clients on setting and achieving their Net-Zero strategy and the key clients include Apollo Private Equity, MUFG, BlackRock, ESB and many others. He is also involved in developing new client solutions in specific areas such as structured PPA solutions and also various sustainable finance solutions.
Mike is also leading on a number of significant bold ideas on the climate agenda including:
- Mike has also been championing the climate and sustainable energy innovation agenda and is working on the development of the concept of a Digital Innovation Exchange to bring together the innovation ecosystem with financial partners and large industrial players to help both the funding and piloting of some exciting new innovations.
- Highlighting the importance of Human Capital in delivering Net Zero
- The potential role of innovative tax policy on the climate agenda
- In the area of sustainable finance, he is focusing on some new ideas to attract capital into very high risk projects in developing markets. In this regard, he has developed a unique investment product called Net Zero Equity which is now been tested by a number of stakeholders.
Mike leads KPMG’s work with the World Economic Forum in the climate change and energy transition areas. This collaboration is designed to develop innovative solutions to help “move the dial” on climate. And involves a number of different initiatives.
Global Renewable Energy Role
- Mike also leads KPMG’s Global Renewables business
- Mike has been active in the renewables sector for over 24 years and advises a number of global corporate groups in the renewable energy and infrastructure areas. In particular, he has advised on both the buy side and sell side for acquisitions and mergers in numerous countries. This is for a variety of clients including utilities, large developers, private equity firms, energy and infrastructure funds. Mike’s clients include Statkraft, BlackRock, Brookfield, Cubico, and many others. Mike has also recently led a global project with Chevron to help that organisation procure renewable power for all of its high carbon locations
- Mike has a background in investment management and has taken the lead in structuring global renewable and climate funds for clients. He has led the external fund structuring work for various global renewable power funds established by BlackRock and has advised numerous others for clients including Greencoat Renewables, RES and Sustainable Development Capital Limited
