Sweden's low-carbon strategy offers model for powering Asia's clean energy future

As Asia scales up advanced energy technologies, Sweden's experience offers practical lessons in building resilient and future-ready energy systems. Its clean energy transition is anchored in renewables, hydro, and nuclear energy, supported by policy consistency and strong public–private collaboration. Today, Sweden is also advancing solutions such as hydrogen, carbon capture, and grid resilience to prepare for deeper decarbonisation.

About Jan Larsson, Chief Executive Officer, Business Sweden

Mr Jan Larsson was appointed CEO of Business Sweden in May 2021. He brings broad experience across business, government, and politics in Sweden.

In the private sector, Mr Larsson served as a management consultant and engagement manager at McKinsey & Company, and was Partner at public relations consultancy Brunswick. He was also CEO of the private equity-owned vocational education company YrkesAkademinand. In addition, he held senior roles as Chief Communications Officer at two leading Nordic banks, Nordea and Handelsbanken.

In government, Mr Larsson was State Secretary, Chief of Staff, Press Secretary, and Speech Writer to the former Prime Minister of Sweden, as well as Political Adviser to the former Finance Minister.

He has also acted as Sherpa to the Prime Minister in the Progressive Governance Network of Heads of Government, conducted academic research in Yugoslavia/Slovenia and Reserve Lieutenant in Sweden's airborne rangers. He has held board positions across both corporate and public-sector organisations.

Mr Larsson holds a degree in Economics and Theoretical Philosophy from Uppsala University in Sweden, and was a research scholar at the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia.
