At the ASEAN-France Forum, energy leaders from France and the Philippines called for deeper cooperation to advance regional power interconnection and accelerate the energy transition.

Delivering their welcome remarks at the Forum, Sophie Mourlon, Director General for Energy and Climate, French Ministry for Energy, and H.E. Felix William B. Fuentebella, Undersecretary, Department of Energy, Republic of the Philippines, underscored the importance of strengthening regional cooperation to achieve a sustainable energy future.
Ms Mourlon highlighted that regional grids lie at the heart of the global energy transition, improving security of supply, reducing system costs, and expanding renewable energy integration. Drawing on Europe’s experience, she noted that France’s grid is now connected to all its neighbours through more than 400 interconnections.
Building a balanced and low-carbon future together
Ms Mourlon further noted that grid connectivity must be paired with low-carbon generation strategies to deliver lasting impact. France’s model, combining nuclear and renewables to produce 95 percent of low-carbon electricity, offers lessons in balancing stability, decarbonisation, and affordability.

She highlighted ongoing French innovation in small modular reactors and green hydrogen, reaffirming France’s readiness to collaborate with ASEAN on new technologies that support shared climate goals
H.E. Mr Fuentebella underscored ASEAN’s collective commitment to the ASEAN Power Grid as a landmark initiative to connect member states. He added that regional interconnection will enable cross-border electricity trade, optimise collective resources, and enhance the sustainability of our energy systems.
