Singapore and Malaysia to Strengthen Bilateral Energy Cooperation

The Energy Market Authority (EMA) of Singapore and the Energy Commission(Suruhanjaya Tenaga - ST) of Malaysia signed a Memorandum of Understanding(MOU) today to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the energy sector.

2. The MOU provides a framework for both organisations to enhance knowledgesharing and technical cooperation in the planning and reliability of gas and electricitysystems, regulation of wholesale and retail electricity markets; and cooperation atmultilateral meetings.

3. The first activity under the MOU will be a virtual dialogue between EMA andST in the first half of 2021, to discuss the challenges and impact of COVID-19 on theenergy sectors in Singapore and Malaysia. The dialogue will allow both organisationsto share best practices on regulatory responses to support energy markets whilesafeguarding consumers’ interests.

4. Mr Ngiam Shih Chun, Chief Executive of EMA, welcomed the MOU as asignificant milestone in EMA’s bilateral cooperation with ST. Mr Ngiam said: "ThisMOU will strengthen the exchanges between EMA and ST. I look forward to closercollaboration on issues of mutual interest, such as greater integration of renewableenergy into our national grids.”

5. Mr Razib Dawood, Chief Executive Officer of ST, said: “The industry landscapeas a whole is becoming more challenging than ever, especially post COVID-19. Welook forward to a greater relationship with our peer in Singapore and we are sure thatthis will be a win-win collaboration for both countries.”

6. Following the MOU signing at the sidelines of the 13th Singapore InternationalEnergy Week (SIEW), Mr Ngiam and Mr Razib joined other speakers to share theirviews on the regulatory challenges facing energy systems during a panel discussionat the SIEW Energy Insights.
