Singapore’s Energy Sector Welcomes Eight Youths Under the Energy-Industry Scholarship

Singapore, 22 October 2024 – Eight engineering students have been awarded this year’s Energy-IndustryScholarship (EIS). The EIS is offered jointly by the Energy Market Authority (EMA) andsponsoring organisations, with the aim of supporting and nurturing young talent for theenergy sector.

2.     The eight scholarship recipients will be attached to five energy companies uponcompletion of their studies and National Service (if applicable). The recipients and theirrespective sponsoring organisations are:

3.        The EIS welcomes students who are keen to make an impact in drivingSingapore’s transition towards a more sustainable energy future. For instance, ChenSze Yee, a Year 2 Electrical and Electronic Engineering student at SingaporePolytechnic, recognises the critical role energy plays in powering everyday life and ispassionate about contributing to the sector. As the energy landscape evolves, she isexcited to be part of the energy transition. “I believe that the energy sector offers aunique opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the world,” said Sze Yee.

4.        Muhammad Syafiq Bin Mohamed Farid, a Year 2 Electrical Engineering studentat Ngee Ann Polytechnic, also developed a keen interest in the energy sector after hisinternship at a solar company, where he gained insights into the broader scope of thesector. “In addition to my internship, my stint as an Energy Ambassador allowed meto engage in meaningful conversations with key industry stakeholders. I am excited tobe able to play my part in building the future of the energy industry,” said Syafiq.

4.        Launched in 2014, the EIS is part of EMA’s and the industry’s collectivecommitment to develop a pipeline of local talent to power Singapore’s criticalinfrastructure. The EIS covers tuition fees (as published by the Polytechnic for therelevant academic year), one-time allowance of $1,200 (to purchase items related tothe course of study), and a monthly living allowance of $1,000.

5.        Workforce capabilities will play a significant role in the energy transition asSingapore decarbonises the energy sector. EMA will continue to work closely with theindustry to ensure a strong manpower pipeline and competent workforce to supportthe energy transition.
