Keeping the lights on today is more complex than ever. In this SIEWCast episode, MoneyFM's Michelle Martin is joined by Mr Yu Tat Ming, CEO of PacificLight. He shares how Singapore is addressing rising energy demand through hydrogen-ready plants, smart grid pilots, and cross-border clean energy projects. He also explains why building with flexibility today is essential to achieving a low carbon future.
Show Notes:
In this episode, we discuss…
- Singapore's first hydrogen-ready power plant and other low carbon solutions, including waste wood-to-energy
- Using battery energy storage and fast-start turbines to enhance grid stability
- How the Punggol smart grid pilot empowers consumers and enables dynamic energy management
- PacificLight's regional collaboration to deliver solar power imports from Indonesia
- Why innovation, partnerships, and talent are key to Singapore's net zero goal

Key takeaways
01:08 | | PacificLight is building Singapore's most efficient, hydrogen-ready power plant, which will begin operations in 2029. The 670 megawatt (MW) facility will help meet growing electricity demand while producing over 40 percent fewer emissions per unit of electricity than the national average. With a battery installed, the plant will also be able to provide immediate support for real-time grid balancing. |
04:37 | | The new facility has two unique features that enhance both resilience and decarbonisation. Firstly, the plant may incorporate carbon capture using cold energy from the nearby Singapore LNG terminal. If hydrogen adoption is delayed, PacificLight could sequester CO2 in depleted oil wells as a contingency emissions solution. |
05:40 | | Secondly, the onsite battery system can inject 70 MW instantly into the grid, alongside a 100 MW fast-start turbine that reaches full load in 18 minutes. Together, they help stabilise supply as more intermittent renewables like solar are deployed. |
06:30 | | The company's smart grid pilot in Punggol will demonstrate how two-way energy flow, real-time controls and dynamic pricing can improve efficiency. Consumers receive usage data and price signals to help reduce peak demand and shift loads more intelligently. |
09:45 | | Partnerships are key to PacificLight's innovation strategy, from cross-border solar imports in Indonesia to upgrading legacy gas plants. These collaborations are helping accelerate a more integrated and resilient energy system. |
12:32 | | PacificLight is diversifying its clean energy mix with projects like a waste wood-to-energy plant. This is the first of its kind in Singapore and expected to be operational by 2027. The company is also exploring carbon capture retrofits for future emissions management. Both initiatives reflect a flexible, future-ready approach that supports today's energy needs and long-term net zero goals. |
13:53 | | As Singapore transforms its power sector, talent will be essential. Mr Yu called for more engineers and technologists to drive the energy transition. He urged the next generation to help shape a cleaner, smarter energy future. |

About our guest Mr Yu Tat Ming was appointed Chief Executive Officer of PacificLight in September 2009 and is responsible for the business strategy and overall direction of the Company. Prior to joining PacificLight, Mr Yu was Vice President, Asset Management, Senoko Power Ltd, where he undertook a leading role in the capital project development, operation and maintenance of Senoko Power Station. During his 20-year tenure at Senoko, he was also responsible for the construction of five generating units at the Senoko Power Station and a major repowering project. He also previously worked for CLP Holdings Limited where he spearheaded the study to convert an existing coal-fired station into a gas-fired combined cycle plant. Mr Yu graduated First Class Honours in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Hong Kong. He holds a Masters in Systems Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. |
