In his current role, Mr David Elzinga is leading the IEA's work on Smart Grids and Energy Systems, including modelling, policy and technology analysis with publications including the IEA Smart Grids Technology Roadmap, Advantage Energy: Emerging Economies, Developing Countries and the Private-Public Sector Interface, among others.
Mr Elzinga led the Smart Grid and Energy Systems technology initiatives at the IEA managing a team both within the division and across the IEA agency to create both quantitative and qualitative analysis. He also developed strategic work plans for a range of new initiatives at the IEA, including: Smart Grids (roadmap, How-to Guide, cost benefits analysis, and other target analysis), Energy Systems (coss-cutting approaches to optimise the energy system) and Energy Storage.
He is the Acting Chief of the Energy Technology Policy (ETP) group in the office of Energy Research and Development of Department of Natural Resources for the Canadian government. The group provides a vital link between energy technology and energy policy by performing targeted and broad domestic and international research in relevant clean energy technology and policy areas. This research is used to influence Canada's policy, technology research, development and demonstration and international negotiations.
Mr Elzinga has published a number of works, including IEA Smart Grids Technology Roadmap, Advantage Energy: Emerging Economies, Developing Countries and the Private Sector Interface, Energy Technology Perspectives 2010 and 2012, and IEA Energy Storage Technology Roadmap (2013). He received his Bachelor degree for Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering-First Class Honours in1997 at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.
