João Pedro Matos Fernandes, born the 12th December 1967, is Portugal’s Minister of Environment and Climate Action, from last October.
Since 2015, and during the XXI Constitutional Government he was Minister of Environment and, from 2018, Minister of Environment and Energy Transition.
Mr. Matos Fernandes served as: President of the Governing Board of the water management company Águas do Porto, EM (2014-2015); Advisor to the Governing Board of Terminais do Norte and Portos do Norte (port management companies from the Manica Group), Director of the Port of Nacala, Mozambique (2012-2013); President of the Association of Portuguese Ports (2008-2010); Chairman of the Governing Board of Viana do Castelo Port since its foundation (2009-2012); Chairman of the Governing Board of the Douro and Leixões ports; Administrator of Quartenaire Portugal, Consulting for Development, and coordinator of several works in the fields of urban and organisational strategy, spatial planning and environmental issues (1999-2005); Head of the Cabinet of the Secretary of State for Environment (1997-1999); Advisor of the Secretary of State for Natural Resources (1995-1997); From 1990 to 1995, he worked in the Northern Region Coordination Commission (Spatial Planning) where he assumed the coordination of the transport sector.
João Pedro Matos Fernandes has been a Professor of the Instituto Superior Técnico (infrastructures) and of the Instituto Superior de Transportes (Energy and Environmental Impacts of Transport). He was a visiting professor, on Master degrees, at the Universities of Oporto, Lisbon and Naples.
João Pedro Matos Fernandes is graduated in Civil Engineering (field - Spatial Planning) by the Oporto University and holds a Master degree on Transportation by the Instituto Superior Técnico, in Lisbon.
