The next time you hop into a showroom for your next car purchase, it could very well be a full-out electric vehicle that's clean and quiet. But for now, Singapore is revving up for the journey towards a green transport future with the launch of its electric vehicle (EV) test-bed on 25 June.
Intended to evaluate and gauge different EV prototypes and charging technologies within the city-state's urbanised environment and road conditions, the outcome could determine if mass adoption will be in the cards further down the road. The launch also puts Singapore on the world map as one the first cities to test-bed an ecologically sustainable and integrated transport solution at the system level.
The inter-agency Electric Vehicle (EV) Taskforce, led by the Energy Market Authority (EMA) and the Land Transport Authority (LTA), on Saturday unveiled three outdoor and two indoor charging stations; the first batch of five Mitsubishi i-MiEVs; and four SMART electric drive Daimler vehicles. Making up the pioneer batch of participants are the LTA, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), Mitsubishi Corporation and Senoko Energy.
