Chee Hong Tat, chief executive of Singapore’s Energy Market Authority speaks at the opening of Shell Innovation Open House Asia on Thursday at SIEW 2014.
Innovation and advances in technology will help to resolve the “trilemma” of energy security, economic competitiveness and environmental sustainability, Chee Hong Tat, chief executive of Singapore’s Energy Market Authority said on Thursday at Singapore International Energy Week 2014.
“Innovation and new technologies are constantly driving new breakthroughs in every sector. For the energy sector, they have led to improvements in energy efficiency and open up new energy sources and solutions to meet rising demand,” Chee said at the opening of Shell Innovation Open House Asia.
Hailing Shell as a “forerunner in technological innovation”, Chee noted its 123-year presence in Singapore, the relocation of its integrated gas business to the city-state and the contributions made by Singapore-based engineers to the design of the world’s largest floating offshore facility being built by the global energy company.
“Earlier this month, Shell was awarded the inaugural Honorary Partner in Progress Award, the Singapore government’s highest honour, to recognise Shell’s contributions to Singapore,” he said. “We look forward to strengthening our collaborations with Shell in the coming years, especially in the area of innovation and R&D.”
The Innovation Open House showcases some of Shell’s most advanced and exciting technology, Chee said.
“For innovation and technology to yield the best results, we need closer collaboration between government, private sector and academia,” he said, citing the example of Singapore’s Pulau Ubin Micro-grid Test-bed that offers a platform for research organisations and companies to develop technology in areas such as energy analytics, storage and grid asset management.
