The continued growth of renewables globally will require transmission grids to change fundamentally and move towards a future Supergrid that delivers reliable, affordable, and sustainable electric energy in the right quantity, at the right time, and at the right place.
High-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology – in the form of so-called Hybrid Grids – will play a central role in this transition, but there are immediate and anticipated challenges to be addressed.
A new report from DNV GL, “Towards a Hybrid AC/DC Transmission Grid”, outlines these challenges and the necessary developments in HVDC technology, in order to realise the Hybrid Grid for a reliable, affordable, and sustainable power supply to society.
