Transportation is one of the most challenging sectors to shift towards a renewables-based energy system. The transportation sector consumes around one-third of global energy, but has the lowest share of renewable energy use compared with every other sector of the economy.
According to Adnan Z. Amin, director-general of the International Renewable Energy Agena (IRENA), the transportation sector offers some of the greatest potential to move our energy system into a post fossil-age. IRENA analysis indicates that quadrupling the share of renewables in transportation – from about 3 percent at present to 11 percent or more in 2030 – is achievable with existing technologies.
Amin identified electrification, sustainable transportation planning and increased production of advanced biofuels as three key ways in which renewables in transport can be scaled up. Hear more from him here.
