Germany’s power grid - a model for the Energy Transition

Germany is leading the way in integrating renewables into their energy system. In this inspiring episode, Dr Dirk Biermann, Chief Markets and System Operations Officer at 50Hertz shares with DNV GL how 50% of renewables penetration has been achieved, and what lessons can be learnt by other countries wanting to follow suit. Dr Biermann also spoke at SIEW 2017.

Renewable energy as a reliable and consistent power supply? Yes, it is possible! Following on from the release of our Energy Transition Outlook 2017 report Dirk shares with us, in this insightful episode, how Germany has handled the challenges of intermittency and variability in renewable energy. He explains the three phases of adopting renewable energy; and considers how achieving shorter lead times has enabled more accuracy in estimation and forecasting of demand. Dirk also gives a fascinating insight into the WindNODE Projekt, as a prototype for the decentralized, green world of the future. Finally, as Germany continues to rely on a significant proportion of renewable energy, Dirk discusses the technological challenges of this approach and considers the uncertainty of a decarbonized future.
