How Singapore is Taking Steps to Achieve an Affordable, Sustainable and Reliable Energy Supply

Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr. Chan Chun Sing delivered the SIEW Opening Remarks about how Singapore is improving its production, management, and consumption of energy to overcome the trilemma of making our energy supply affordable, sustainable, and reliable. By Kevin Goh

Singapore will need to find ways to meet the nation’s energy demand while addressing the energy trilemma: ensuring an affordable, reliable and sustainable energy supply, said Mr Chan Chun Sing, Minister for Trade and Industry, in his opening remarks at the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) 2018.

In pursuit of this goal, Singapore – a country with limited natural resources – will need to innovate to maximise the use of our land and space. Minister Chan highlighted JTC’s SolarLand and SolarRoof programmes as two such examples. They are set to install solar panels on vacant land rooftops, achieving 100 MWp of installed solar PV capacity by 2030.

Day-2-8-1

The emergence of new technologies, such as energy storage and smart energy management systems, will be key in integrating solar and other renewables into the grid for a more reliable energy supply. The Energy Market Authority (EMA) of Singapore will publish an Energy Storage Systems (ESS) policy paper to provide guidance on the use and regulatory treatment of ESS.

EMA will also launch the ACCelerating Energy Storage for Singapore (ACCESS) programme with PSA Corporation Limited and SembCorp Industries to facilitate the adoption of ESS in Singapore.

To ensure future sustainability, Singapore must be more efficient in the way we consume and produce energy. To help industries achieve this goal, Minister Chan Chun Sing announced that Singapore will roll out a set of Industry Energy Efficiency grant schemes and a Genco Energy Efficiency Grant Call.

With new technologies in place, Singapore will be in good stead to improve its production, management, and consumption of energy to overcome the trilemma.
