Barakah Nuclear Plant: From Vision to Validation

Contributed by Charlotte Goh, EMA

At SIEW TechTable, Mohamed Al Braiki, Consulting General Manager, Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC), shared the success factors behind how ENEC delivered one of the world’s most recent new nuclear energy programmes. All four units of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant are currently generating 40TWh annually, offering a new model for deploying civil nuclear energy.

Guided by clear policy, strong regulation, and a commitment to transparency, the Barakah plant provides 25 percent of the UAE’s electricity while avoiding 22 million tonnes of CO₂ annually. Local workforce training, community engagement, and stringent safety oversight made it one of the world’s most successful new-build nuclear programmes. “

Mr Al Braiki enthused that with governance, commitment, and capacity building, nuclear energy deployment can deliver game-changing results for energy security and sustainability.
