Asia’s Energy Investment Challenge: SMS Koh Poh Koon
02.21 PM
Singapore, as an Association Country of the IEA, will be partnering with the agency on two key initiatives for the region, said Dr. Koh Poh Koon, Senior Minister of State, Ministry Trade and Industry and the Ministry of National Development, during his opening address at the inaugural Singapore-IEA Forum, held this morning at SIEW.

The first initiative is the Singapore-IEA Regional Training Hub, to provide greater access to IEA expertise. The second is today’s Forum – a platform for global energy leaders to discuss the future of energy markets.
The IEA has projected that Asia’s energy demand will continue to increase rapidly, and so Dr. Koh said that there is a growing need to invest in energy infrastructure and technological solutions in Asia to ensure that the region has access to affordable, sustainable and reliable energy. But energy access remains an important issue. Over 500 million people in Asia lack access to modern energy services. In order to help unlock the economic potential of Asia, we can channel capital to bankable projects and promote enabling environments for new business models today.

For today’s Forum, Singapore and IEA have curated a programme to help energy players better understand the landscape and to discuss solutions. The outcomes of today’s discussions will be shared at the upcoming IEA Ministerial Meeting in November.
Stay tuned for more highlights from Dr. Koh’s full address.

The growth for renewable energy is “unstoppable”, said Mr Adnan Z. Amin, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) during his keynote at the Singapore Energy Summit: Integrating Renewables.
In 2016, more than half of net additional global generation capacity, or 161 gigawatts (GW), came from renewables.
Even traditional and established oil and gas producers are pursuing renewable energy. China is set to invest US$360 billion in renewables by 2020, while Russia and Saudi Arabia have launched roadmaps to develop their renewable energy potential. Read the full article
