Insights from SIEW 2019 Global Launch Q&A
06.00 PM

Following the presentations, Sri Jegarajah of CNBC moderated an open-floor discussion with Zee Loh of Shell and Sharad Somani of KPMG. The conversation focused on how Asia can shift its longer-term energy ambitions into actionable solutions that can be implemented today.
Three key takeaways arose from the Q&A:
1. Despite the rise of CO2 emissions, the ambition for a cleaner energy mix in Asia remains. Energy efficiency and technological advancements will each play a critical role in the transition to renewable energy – as will government support.
“The primary concern politicians have when it comes to #energy options is cost. But choosing #sustainability and doing the best for their people are also priorities.” - @sharadsomani, @KPMGSingapore #SIEW2019 pic.twitter.com/nM0UbAhJAe

2. Carbon tax is often cited as a potential solution to lowering CO2 emissions, however, increased innovation and competition will likely be more impactful.
“Every scenario has different #energy requirements. We have to provide a diversity of energy sources, and in the end it is the customer who chooses.” - Zee Loh, @Shell Energy Singapore #SIEW2019 pic.twitter.com/u5mn1y1ZAk
— SingaporeEnergyWeek (@SIEW_sg) March 26, 2019
3. Over the next 10 years, Southeast Asia will prove suitable for the adoption of clean energy. But countries across the region remain focused on the ability to access power at the most reasonable price. Cost advantages will therefore be key in finding the right energy mix.
“If you ask where renewable #energy is headed in the next 10 years, there is a strong case for @ASEAN to become a dynamic hub as costs of renewable energy decrease.” - @sharadsomani, @KPMGSingapore #SIEW2019— SingaporeEnergyWeek (@SIEW_sg) March 26, 2019

“Renewable energy has a real chance of helping us achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals”: Sharad Somani, KPMG
05.00 PM

Sharad Somani, Executive Director and ASPAC Head – Power and Utilities, KPMG spoke about trends and opportunities in the global renewable landscape. Among KPMG’s predictions is that ASEAN will lead renewable energy deployment within the next decade.
Over the next 10 years, we will see @ASEAN taking the lead as the new hub for #renewable energy deployment, innovation and investments. – @sharadsomani, @KPMGSingapore #SIEW2019
— SingaporeEnergyWeek (@SIEW_sg) March 26, 2019
ASEAN’s renewables sector will benefit from its strong eco-system – driven by the established financial institutions and funds in Singapore and the extensive successful renewable development experience across the rest of Asia.
Technology could unleash @ASEAN's huge #renewable potential for solar and wind, due to falling costs and rising demand. @sharadsomani @KPMGSingapore #SIEW2019
— SingaporeEnergyWeek (@SIEW_sg) March 26, 2019
KPMG sees the implementation of renewable energy projects in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. New funds will continue to flow into ASEAN renewable markets, with renewable deals volume to continue growing in ASEAN.

SIEW 2019: “Accelerating Energy Transformation” – 29 Oct to 1 Nov
03.15 pm
This year, SIEW’s theme will focus on “Accelerating Energy Transformation”.
The energy landscape continues to experience major shifts. Global energy demand is expanding, and this is especially pronounced in Asia. The growth in energy demand will also be driven by electrification of transportation, industries and buildings. This demand has been supported by increased supply of oil and gas, lowered cost of renewables and technological advancements in energy storage. However, there remain concerns over meeting climate change commitments, even as renewable energy investments hit record highs.
Against this backdrop, SIEW will provide a platform for global energy stakeholders to deliberate on and accelerate the transformation towards a more sustainable energy future.
