Derek Wong

Derek Wong joined Excelerate Energy (NYSE: EE) in October 2019 after a diplomatic career with the U.S. Department of State. Previously, he was based in Houston, where he had global responsibilities leading Excelerate’s efforts in government relations, corporate social responsibility, sustainability, and public affairs. Derek served as a policy advisor in the State Department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs and completed diplomatic postings in Mexico City, Hong Kong, and Buenos Aires. He received the State Department’s Meritorious Honor Award and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Gold Medal for Exceptional Service. Derek has featured as a panel speaker at CERAWeek, the Global Energy Forum, Gastech, and the Madrid Energy Conference. He currently serves on the Atlantic Council Energy Advisory Group, the Argentina Texas Chamber of Commerce’s Advisory Board, the University of Pennsylvania’s Huntsman Alumni Council, and the Institute of the Americas’ Energy and Sustainability Steering Committee. Earlier in his career, Derek worked as a client relations manager for nonprofit fundraising platform Mightycause, a management consultant for Oliver Wyman, and an analyst for NERA Economic Consulting. Derek earned a Master of Public Administration, with Distinction, from the London School of Economics. He also graduated with honors from the University of Pennsylvania’s Huntsman Program in International Studies and Business, earning a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the Wharton School and a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies from the College of Arts and Sciences. He speaks Cantonese, Mandarin, and Spanish.
