At the 7th East Asia Summit, President Barack Obama, in partnership with Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of the Republic of Indonesia, announced the formation of the U.S.-Asia Pacific Comprehensive Energy Partnership (USACEP). The USACEP initiative focuses on four key regional priorities: renewables and cleaner energy; markets and interconnectivity; the emerging role of natural gas; and sustainable development. The United States has made available up to $6 billion in resources, in addition to other monetary support for capacity building and technical assistance to drive U.S. energy investments in the region.
In support of USACEP, the U.S. Department of State, the Energy Market Authority (EMA) of Singapore and the Energy Department of Brunei are hosting a half-day Public Private Partnership (PPP) Conference on the afternoon of Tuesday, October 29 during the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW). This conference will focus on power markets and interconnectivity – a key theme of USACEP. The PPP Conference will bring together public and private sector actors along with civil society to explore the following: (a) the challenges and opportunities for Asian power market integration; and (b) how to benefit from examples of regional electrical interconnections. Confirmed speakers already include ministers of energy and senior private sector executives.
