Seat Vacancy Detector System

Seat Vacancy Detector System has both a wired and wireless version of SVDS that can selectively power electrical devices by monitoring the distribution of the occupancy of seats in a room. This system is able to differentiate between the presence of a person or an object on the seat based on the weight loading on the sensor unit.  It then provides information for available seats in the room via a centralised display.

The seat vacancy detector system incorporates the use of a ‘new’ sensing parameter for smart building management.  It provides automation, information and potential energy savings using sensors made from low-cost materials.  The system is simple, versatile and can be applied to various seated settings.

Peak Load Shaving via Gamification

The Peak Load Shaving via Gamification seeks to change demand side power consumption behaviour using gamification methods.

As Singapore is exploring the implementation of smart grid technology, this project utilizes the data to drive a gamification system. The underlying concept for the project is roughly similar to the Insinc programme that attempts to motivate people to travel during off peak periods.

Pay to Use System

The Pay to Use System seeks to complement the university’s efforts for energy savings initiatives by incentivising students, through the reduction of hostel fees, to reduce electricity wastage and minimising unnecessary consumption.

This Pay to Use pilot project will be implemented in NUS residences. In exchange for a reduction in hostel fees, students will pay for the amount of electricity they consume within the residences. Tracking of consumption will be done through installations of smart meters and the current Matric Card System in place in NUS. By putting a visible cost on electricity, students would be more conscientious about their consumption and thereby leading to reduction of wastage.
