There has been much discussion regarding renewable energy and micro grids. However, there needs to be proper integration of renewable energy sources with automated micro grids and the appropriate management of such integration. Some of the research challenges ahead lie with the Hybrid AC/DC Micro Grid, providing plug and play connectivity with key renewables and Smart Multi Energy Systems (SMES). This would enable the integration of electricity generators, gas/diesel engines, thermal networks, multi-Energy Management and Information Systems and Smart Micro Grid systems. Furthermore, a master stroke to ensure grid balance and deal with peak electricity requirements and intermittent renewable energy generation, exists in the form of energy storage devices which are necessary for further development, deployment and apposite integration.
Therefore, this Roundtable aims to:
- Provide an open platform for intellectual exchanges between both private and public sector professionals with regards to major technology hurdles, possibilities and best practices in aforementioned domains
- Highlight the benefits of demonstrating such integrations on a real-life scale, aiming for cost-attractive electrification of remote islands, villages and to serve a wide range of industrial and commercial loads
- Discuss how policies can be developed to support new technology solutions
