Global Gas Security and Implications for Power Systems

Organiser International Energy Agency (IEA)
Date 26 Oct 2017, 14:00 - 17:00 hrs
Venue Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Marina Bay Sands Singapore

As natural gas markets have become more globalized, gas security has become an increasingly important topic among the large and growing number of countries that rely on natural gas as a key fuel source. At the same time, power systems around the world are increasingly relying on natural gas for electricity generation. In many jurisdictions, natural gas is displacing coal generation and supporting the integration of variable renewables, decreasing the carbon intensity of power systems but raising concerns over diversity of supply.

This session will present the IEA’s 2017 Global Gas Security Review, followed by a discussion of gas security issues in the Asia Pacific region. It will then present the IEA’s views on electricity security, with a particular focus on the relevance of natural gas, as well as on the role renewable generation and demand-side technologies can play to ensure security of supply.
