Why would a community want to ‘island’ from the wider grid? And how will this impact on the way that communities use energy in the future? DNV GL discusses the Brooklyn Microgrid project with Belinda Kinkead, Director of LO3 Energy, Australia, and finds out why this system could be critical for those areas affected by natural disasters.
After the devastating impact of Hurricane Sandy, LO3 began a project which would enable a community to disconnect from the wider grid in times of extreme weather or catastrophe. In this forward thinking episode, we discuss the motivation behind this project, and how it has been adopted by the Brooklyn community. Belinda also explains how blockchain supports a local market place where residents can buy and sell energy; shares with us how the microgrid is both virtual and physical, and considers what this means for the community. Finally, Belinda highlights how the Brooklyn Microgrid has enabled the local community to have greater control over the source of their energy.
