New opportunities for clean energy to continue in 2018: BNEF

New-Opportunies

2018 will continue to be a strong year for clean energy, says Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) in its latest predictions. This follows a year where global clean energy investment reached US$333.5 billion, the second highest annual figure ever.

China, with a record investment of US$132.6 billion in 2017, remains the world’s leading clean energy investor – a position the country has held for every year since 2009, with the exception of 2011.

According to BNEF, similar levels of global investment are expected for 2018. Continued economies of scale and technological improvements will drive more market opportunities – especially in clean power, storage and electric vehicles (EVs).

Of the ten predictions, the decrease in battery prices is particularly significant. This will contribute to two upward trends – energy storage deployments and EV sales. BNEF predicts that global storage deployments in 2018 will exceed 2GW/4GWh, led by South Korea; while global EV sales is projected to increase by about 40 per cent to 1.5 million.
