The Energy Market Authority (EMA) will be embarking on a two-year trial forelectricity imports from Peninsular Malaysia to Singapore.
2. To meet our climate change commitments, there is a need to change the waySingapore produces and uses energy. Tapping on regional power grids for cleanerenergy resources is one strategy to further diversify Singapore’s energy supply.
3. The trial aims to assess and refine the technical and regulatory frameworks forimporting electricity into Singapore. This would help to facilitate larger-scale importsfrom the region in future.
4. EMA plans to issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) by March 2021 for 100megawatts (MW) of electricity imports. This will make up about 1.5% of Singapore’speak electricity demand. Under this RFP, electricity imports could begin as early asend-2021, via the existing electricity interconnector between Singapore and Malaysia.
5. One importer will be selected through an open and competitive selectionprocess. Potential importers will have to demonstrate their supply reliability, credibilityand track record, ability to secure demand from Singapore consumers, and managethe carbon output of generation supply.
