The Energy Market Authority (EMA) of Singapore and New Zealand’s Electricity Authority Te Mana Hiko will deepen cooperation on electricity market regulation and the transition to a low-carbon energy future, under a Memorandum of Arrangements (MOA).
Signed on the sidelines of the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW), the MOA brings together the regulatory experience and expertise of both agencies. New Zealand’s experience in operating an electricity system with a high share of renewable energy provides useful opportunities for exchanges as Singapore advances the decarbonisation of its power sector. The MOA covers cooperation and knowledge sharing in the planning and regulation of electricity markets, as well as the management and integration of low-carbon energy technologies.
Under the partnership, EMA and the Electricity Authority will pursue a range of activities to support closer exchanges between the two agencies. These include staff training, joint research, workshops and seminars, as well as the sharing of knowledge and regulatory experiences. The agencies will also explore opportunities for high-level dialogues and cooperation at regional and international platforms, including the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and SIEW.
Mr Puah Kok Keong, Chief Executive of EMA, said: “We are pleased to establish this partnership with New Zealand’s Electricity Authority to deepen our cooperation and exchange regulatory experiences. We look forward to strengthening our exchanges with the Electricity Authority, particularly in the planning and regulation of energy markets and the integration of low-carbon energy technologies.”
Mr Erik Westergaard, Deputy Chair of the Electricity Authority, said: “We welcome this opportunity to formalise a closer relationship with the Energy Market Authority in Singapore. Globally, electricity systems are experiencing an unprecedented change driven by rising demand and the shift to clean sources of energy. The more we collaborate, share expertise and learn from others’ experiences, the better equipped we are to shape regulatory settings that support a resilient electricity system and meet consumers’ evolving needs.”
