Singapore and the International Energy Agency (IEA) Mark a Decade of Partnership at 10th Singapore-IEA Forum

The Energy Market Authority (EMA) and International Energy Agency (IEA) will convene the 10th Singapore-IEA Forum on 27 October 2026 at the 19th Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW). Established in 2017, the Singapore-IEA Forum has grown to become a strategic platform for the IEA to engage policymakers, regulators and industry leaders on key energy security issues affecting Asia and the Pacific. This year’s forum will be centred on the theme “Securing Tomorrow’s Energy Through Connected Systems”.

As energy systems become increasingly interconnected, energy security depends not only on the availability of supply, but also on the resilience of cross-border interconnections. Platforms such as the Singapore-IEA Forum provide an opportunity for policymakers, regulators and industry leaders to exchange perspectives on strengthening energy security and resilience, while supporting the region’s evolving energy needs.

The Forum also marks a milestone in the rich history of cooperation between Singapore and the IEA. Since Singapore became an IEA Association country in 2016, both sides have deepened collaboration in areas including energy security, regional interconnectivity, clean energy investment and capacity building. This partnership has also supported stronger engagement between the IEA and countries across Southeast Asia. This year’s Forum will include opening remarks by Singapore Minister for Energy, Trade and Industry, Dr Tan See Leng, and IEA Executive Director, Dr Fatih Birol, followed by sessions on energy security and the future of gas, and on opportunities to fast-track power grid interconnections across the region.

In 2024, the partnership between Singapore and the IEA was further strengthened with the establishment of the IEA Regional Cooperation Centre in Singapore, the IEA’s first office outside its headquarters in Paris. The Centre supports the IEA’s engagement with Southeast Asia and the wider region through policy dialogue, technical cooperation and capacity-building initiatives. Through the Centre and teams in the IEA’s headquarters in Paris, the IEA has also been helping advance ASEAN energy security, transition and resilience priorities.

Puah Kok Keong, Chief Executive of the Energy Market Authority, said: “Over the past decade, Singapore and the IEA have built a strong partnership anchored in our shared commitment to energy security and regional cooperation. As energy systems become more interconnected and complex, continued dialogue and collaboration will be important to strengthen resilience and support the region’s evolving energy needs. We look forward to deepening our partnership with the IEA and working together to advance a more secure and connected energy future for Singapore and the region.”

Dr Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the IEA, said: “Southeast Asia is on the front line of today’s energy crisis because of its heavy reliance on Middle Eastern imports. This underscores the value of the IEA Regional Cooperation Centre in Singapore, established two years ago to deepen our work across the region. We are supporting governments’ immediate responses while helping build more resilient energy systems, and we look forward to expanding this work, including in support of Singapore’s 2027 ASEAN Chairmanship.”
