As founder of Suntech Power Holdings in China, considered the world's largest producer of solar panels, Dr Shi well-placed to observe and talk about market developments in solar PVs. He believes strongly that solar energy offers a "win-win" situation for consumers as it has stable costs through power purchase agreements, an assured and predictable electricity supply, and is cheaper than diesel power plants in off-grid areas. Grid parity in many regions and continuous incremental innovation will only see cost and PV prices dropping further in the near future.
Dr Shi received a Bachelor's degree in optical science from Changchun University of Science and Technology in China back in 1983; a Master's degree in laser physics from the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1986; and a PhD in electrical engineering from the University of New South Wales in Australia in 1992.
