Lao PDR has signalled intentions to becoming a source of energy supply to the region through its large hydropower projects, and selling the energy generated to neighbours such as Thailand.
Prior to his current role as Minister of Energy and Mines, Minister Daravong had his energy beginnings as General Manager of the Lao State Fuel Company in the mid-1970s, before joining the civil service in 1982 as Vice Minister for the Ministry of Material and Equipment. From 1984-1989, he wore the hat of Vice Minister, Ministry of Industry and Handicrafts, and from 1990-1991, he was promoted to Acting Minister, before becoming. Minister in 1992 until 2002. Concurrently, he was ASEAN Economic Minister of Lao PDR from 1997-2006, Vice Chairman of Lao National Committee for Energy from 2001-2006, and Minister of the Ministry of Commerce from 2003-2006. June 2006-November 2008 saw him as Minister of Planning and Investment. Minister Daravong graduated in 1974 with a Mechanical Engineering degree from a Canadian university.
