David was awarded a personal chair in Computational Fluid Dynamics by the Court of the University of Edinburgh in June 2009, following his appointment as a Reader in the Institute for Energy Systems in April 2006. From September 2009 he was Director of the Engineering Postgraduate School, before taking up the role of Director of Research in August 2012. His current post is part of the Edinburgh Research Partnership in Engineering, funded by the Scottish Funding Council, and he holds an honorary chair at the Heriot-Watt University.

David coordinated EquiMar – Equitable Testing and Evaluation of Marine Energy Extraction Devices in terms of Performance, Cost and Environmental Impact, a €5,485K European Framework 7 RTD project involving 23 partners from 11 member states. He is a co-investigator on the project to build the £10M FloWaveTT test basin in Edinburgh, the world’s first circular combined current and wave test basin, due to open in January 2014. He is Director of the Industrial Doctoral Centre for Offshore Renewable Energy, a joint venture between the Universities of Edinburgh, Exeter and Strathclyde and is Research Manager for the UK Centre for Marine Energy Research (UKCMER). He continues his work in this area through collaborations with both the Universities of Kyoto and Hokkaido in Japan, NTOU, NTU and NSYSU in Taiwan and through the ETI funded PerAWaT project in the UK. Since 1991 he has been an investigator on over thirty million pounds worth of research grants and published more than 70 refereed conference and journal papers.
