Mr. Hermantoro earned his Undergraduate degree from Geology Faculty of UPN Veteran and Master in Business Policy from University of Indonesia. He began his career at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in 1987.

Before serving as the Director General, he held various key positions in the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, including as the Planning and Operation Bureau Head at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources from 2007 to July 2008, then the Director of Upstream Oil and Gas Development of the Oil and Gas Directorate General from July 2008 to July 2012 and the scretary of the Oil and Gas Directorate Gneral July 2012 until he appointed as the Director General in January 2013. He was also a representative for Indonesia in OPEC until December 2008.
