Hon. Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Maximus Johnity Ongkili has held various posts in the Federal Cabinet, beginning in 2004 as a Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, then moving on to be the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation from 2008 to 2013. He is currently the Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water.
YB Datuk Seri Dr. Maximus Ongkili was born on October 26, 1953 in Jesselton (known as Kota Kinabalu), Sabah. He had his early education in Sabah and won the prestigious Colombo Plan Scholarship to study Agricultural Science in Australia. He later obtained a PhD in Agricultural Economics from the La Trobe University in 1985. He returned to Malaysia and worked as a lecturer at Universiti Pertanian Malaysia (now known as Universiti Putra Malaysia) and held senior research positions with the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur from 1985 to 1987 and the Sabah Institute for Development Studies (IDS) from 1991 to 1994. He is married to Datin Seri Joan Maluda and they have 2 children - Rachel Jane and Andreas Jordan.
