Peter Hartley is the George and Cynthia Mitchell Professor of Economics, and Rice Scholar in Energy Studies at the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy, at Rice University in Houston, Texas. He is also currently the BHP Billiton Chair in the Business of Resources at the University of Western Australia in Perth.
He completed an honours degree in mathematics in 1974, and a Master’s Degree in Economics in 1977 at the Australian National University. From 1975-77, he worked for the Priorities Review Staff and the Economic Division of the Prime Minister's Department in the Australian Government. He obtained a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Chicago in 1980. He was an Assistant Professor of Economics at Princeton University from 1980-86, and an Associate Professor of Economics at Rice from 1986-93, when he was promoted to a Full Professor. His research and publications have covered a number of areas of economics, but over the last 15 years has focused solely on energy economics and policy.
