Dr Elspeth Thomson has researched and written extensively on the issues and challenges surrounding Asia’s current energy policies and needs. She is a Senior Fellow of the Energy Studies Institute (ESI) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) where she is also the Head of ESI’s Energy and Environment Division. She received her PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. Through the 1990s she taught at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver and Lingnan University in Hong Kong. Originally from Canada, she has lived and worked in Singapore since 2000. Before joining ESI, she was a Fellow of the East Asian Institute at NUS for six years where she specialised in China’s energy sector. Her research interests span Asian energy security, Asian energy economics and energy and the environment. Besides her book, The Chinese Coal Industry: An Economic History, she has also published numerous edited research collections and written many journal articles dealing with energy issues facing Asian governments today.
