Having obtained a PhD in thermal physics engineering from Tianjin University in 2005, Zhu Li began teaching at the university’s School of Architecture, specialising in low-carbon technologies. Her current focus is on low-carbon building design, new energy integration and sustainable energy system planning for low-carbon towns.

Zhu Li is the first president of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Sustainable Energy Center, which was officially established by the National Energy Administration in 2014 and recognised in the 2014 APEC Economic Leaders’ Declaration. She is also the deputy executive director of Tianjin Municipal Energy Research Center under the guidance of Tianjin Municipal Development and Reform Commission and the Sustainable Energy Research Center of Tianjin University. Zhu Li is also a member of the Studies Committee of the World Energy Council and executive director and vice-secretary of the Tianjin Renewable Energy Socieiy.

Professor Zhu Li is the author of over 130 published papers, more than 80 of them indexed by SCI/ISTP/EI. She has been granted 15 invention patents and has three Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) patents. She has organised around 20 international conferences, workshops and seminars. She led the APEC Low-Carbon Town Tour and supported the APEC Low-Carbon Town promotion activity. She has received grants for over 40 international and national projects in her specific area of interest.
